The latest release of the CAT tool OmegaT adds quite a few very useful functions. I already looked at some of the more important features in previous articles about OmegaT, and this video explains some of the less important ones.
Custom sorting order of project files
Whereas previously, the order of files in the Project Files window was alphabetical only, it is now possible to sort files manually or automatically to your heart’s content. The new feature allows you to put the files in a more logical order than offered by the default alphabetical sorting. For example, you normally want OmegaT to give you chapters of a manual in the sequence in which they go in the actual materials. Sorting is possible by clicking the newly added buttons on the right or the table headers. OmegaT saves the custom order as a project-specific file (project folder/omegat/files_order.txt).
This window also has a new column called Number of unique segments, providing a more meaningful view of the project.
Number of files in the Statistics window
Another column was added to the statistics launched via Tools → Statistics. It gives a quick overview of how many files are untranslated and how many files actually have unique segments. For instance, it may give a hint that although a project includes ten files, only two of them actually have unique segments.
Glossary path and name
The default name of the glossary that OmegaT creates automatically has been changed from “project name-glossary.txt” to “glossary.txt.” If a file under this name already exists in the glossary folder, OmegaT will use it by default. However, this is only true when the glossary folder is inside the project. When it is outside the project, OmegaT uses the old naming pattern.
If you change the path to the glossary folder, the path to the glossary file will now change automatically (again using the default glossary name), whereas in the previous versions, you had to change it manually.
You can benefit from these glossary-related changes as long as you keep glossaries inside project folders and keep the default name.
